That’s why I like the one-board approach. Not because it’s trendy but because it reduces re-orientation time. You open the board, you see your current thread and you keep going.
Strategically this is where you win your week. Your board becomes a simple contract with yourself: one research thread at a time with a visible next step.
Pick one item each week, produce it and stop:
- Capture one source: citation + 3-sentence takeaway + one how I might use this note.
- Tighten one definition: rewrite a key construct in your own words then add one supporting citation you already trust.
- Build one mini-map: 5-7 nodes that link your variables, stakeholders or process steps with one gap you still need to resolve.
- Draft one paragraph: not perfect just complete then add a fix next time note at the end.
- Create one advisor packet: 3 questions, 2 decisions you’ve already made and 1 thing you want confirmed.
When your sprint is built around small outputs it becomes easier to show up without negotiating with yourself first. And you start to feel something that’s surprisingly rare in doctoral work: you’re done for the day.
And if your advisor feedback tends to live in scattered emails or comments, give it a lane on the board called Advisor queue. When feedback has a home you can process it like work not like emotional weather.

If you want the sprint to compound you need one thing more than discipline. You need fast re-entry.

So design your DBA work to restart quickly. Here are two small moves that make a big difference over months.
First, keep a restart card on your board. It’s just three lines:
- Next action (one sentence)
- Open question (one sentence)
- Anchor source (one citation you’ll re-open)
When you return after a chaotic week you don’t have to remember what you were doing. You just follow the card.
Second, set a minimum viable sprint for rough weeks. If 30 minutes isn’t available do 10. The goal is continuity not drama. You’re keeping the research thread alive and that matters more than the length of any single session.
